Dr Samoon finalizes state animal breeding policy – paves way for introduction of new developmental schemes in ASH sector.

Principal Secretary Animal Sheep Husbandry, Fisheries and Transport Dr Asgar Hassan Samoon today chaired a meeting at Civil secretariat Srinagar in which a comprehensive review of the bovine breeding activities in the State including finalization of specie wise breeding policy of the state was undertaken. The meeting was also attended by Directors of Animal/Sheep Husbandry Kashmir/Jammu, Chief Executive Officers Livestock Development Boards J/K, Animal Breeding & Genetics Experts from SKUAST-K/J, Dean FVSC Kashmir and other senior officers of Animal and Sheep Husbandry Department.
Dr Samoon laying stress on the need for the sector to double its output in the next 5-7 years and finalizing the breeding policy that encompasses this requirement also brought to fore the different needs of the state viz a viz its geo-climatic divisions as well as various species that are distributed in them. A comprehensive breeding policy has been made ready and will be submitted on 1st of October 2018 by a committee that includes experts from SKUAST & developmental departments. This would meet the overwhelming demand for a concrete, dynamic and comprehensive Breeding Policy which was in waiting since last 10 years – and would pave way for introduction of many schemes covering development and conservation of precious genetic resources of J&K state.
On this occasion a draft of the J&K Bovine Breeding Act for regulating various bovine breeding activities in the State was also discussed and circulated among the members for review.
